Susanna Kahr

The pursuit of happiness is a big part of the American dream. For many people, the starting point is finding a great job where they feel happy and appreciated. Jobs like this not only promote mental health among employees, but are also great for employers too. The happier you are at work, the more committed you are as an employee, the better you perform. That’s why, we’ve taken the time to find out which states are home to America’s happiest employees. Want to know where to move to? According to our results, you should consider North Dakota, Utah and Iowa. Surprised? Well, these states fought their way to the top for the first time this year, topping last year’s clear winners – Arkansas and Missouri.

On kununu.com, employees and applicants rank companies on a scale that ranges from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied) for the following categories – working conditions, career opportunities and salary. The kununu Happiness Score, which was used to compare levels of happiness for employees in different states is composed of the most important factors for employee satisfaction in the workplace, which are: team spirit, management style, engaging tasks and work atmosphere. Our Happiness Index is the result of analysing nearly 77,000 reviews of American employers over the last 12 months.

North Dakota, here we pledge ourselves to thee

North Dakota is not just known for the Roosevelt National Park and its prairie dogs, from today on it should be known for one thing above all else, its abundance of happy employees! With a Happiness Index of 3.89 points, North Dakota is the clear winner. North Dakota, which was ranked 5th last year, impressed across the board this year, scoring highly in every single category. According to kununu reviews, this state has the best bosses, the most interesting tasks, the best working environments and the most team spirit. Is this reflected in the success of the local companies? Absolutely! North Dakota is considered a pioneer in the field of agriculture and is known for its well-established oil industry. Moritz Kothe, CEO of kununu had this to say: “American employers have realized the importance of happiness in the workplace and realized that they too can benefit from having satisfied employees. Their ability to motivate employees over a long period of time is a key success factor. To this end, two-way dialogue ensures that both employees and employers work towards a common goal in the best possible way and makes sure that both are highly satisfied as a result.”
