Congratulations to our Non-Profit Employer of the Month – AARP!•
What makes you happy at work? Is it your boss? The beautiful working environment? Your colleagues, perhaps? Maybe your colleagues have become friends by now getting you through difficult situations with a wink. Colleagues who respect you and appreciate your work are golden; especially this appreciation is important in making your job feel worth-while. Our Non-Profit Employer of the Month has made it their mission to bring this appreciation out into the world and make the lives of many workers easier. AARP’s main focus lies with older employees who have earned special recognition for their knowledge and expertise. Find out how AARP lives up to this in their daily work and why they deserve kununu’s special nomination as Employer of the Month.
AARP is the place to work this October!
AARP is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit organizations empowering people to turn their goals and dreams into real possibilities. Goals like strengthening communities, supporting elderly people when it comes to healthcare, financial security and personal fulfillment are integral. Jo Ann Jenkins, AARP CEO, explains their mission: “We need to get rid of the outdated stereotypes about aging and spark new solutions, so more of us can choose how we want to live as we age. For young people, living to 100 is not a pipe dream, it’s a real possibility”.
This mission is carried out by every single employee as one user reviews on kununu: “Social mission and everyone is on board with that!! Dedicated, smart people.” But why are AARP’s employees so motivated? Potentially because they offer excellent compensation and benefits packages and encourage staff to challenge themselves and be innovative in the work they do. This does not only lead to a happy and motivated team, but also to an extraordinary good score for company culture of 4,19 points (out of 5). Apart from that, there is another aspect that has AARP leaving all its competitors behind: Gender equality. On kununu, AARP have a rating of 4,15 points and this score is also reflected in the reviews given: “Support and inclusion of employees is extremely good.” Another user shares a similar personal experience: “AARP walks their talk and hires at all ages. The attitude, is if you can do the job, you can do the job regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity.” Is this also the key for AARP’s success? We asked Grant Clough, HR Specialist at AARP.
What are the unique things you’re doing to attract talent?
Grant Clough: AARP prides itself on our mission to make life better for people as they age. You’ll find that mission through-out our employee experience. Whether it be working alongside the four generations in our workforce, or our benefits package that meets our employees at every age of their lifecycle; AARP is dedicated to a progressive work environment where employees can grow in their current jobs and build a career to meet their highest aspirations.
In your opinion, why would someone apply at your company?
Grant Clough: Inside AARP each and every employee is empowered to innovate to make life better for people as they age. People at AARP come and work here because they believe in the mission, they believe in the work that we’re doing to empower people to chose how they live as they age, and they come to drive social impact across the country.
Are there special perks that you offer that positively impacts your team morale?
Grant Clough: AARP is leading a revolution in the way in which people view and live life after 50. We exhibit that same vigor through the benefits that we offer our employees. In addition to competitive pay, incentive, and recognition programs; AARP offers employees the ability to
- balance work and personal responsibilities with flexible work arrangements, paid and unpaid leave programs (including caregiving and parental leave), a phased retirement program, and renewal (a paid sabbatical for long term employees)
- continue their personal and professional development with tuition assistance, career coaches, workshops, certifications, and professional memberships; and
- plan for their “what’s next” with a robust pension and retirement savings plan
Sounds too good to be true? Actually, no, as the reviews on kununu show similar impressions: “While job security at any company is never guaranteed, AARP does try to offer staff many professional growth training opportunities to allow the staff a chance to grow with the company. Good work is often rewarded.” This not only motivates the employees, but keeps the spirit up to outperform and achieve unbelievable goals like a yearly revenue of 1,6 billion dollars. Success, however, does not just fall in your lap: AARP is always working on their internal communication and is steadily improving processes and meetings. One former employee writes on kununu that the internal communication within departments is very good as well as the goal setting to align your work with the company goal. What more do you need to become one of the happiest employees on earth? An overall kununu score of 3,97? Check! A recommendation rate of 98%? Check. So, to sum up, in our opinion AARP is an excellent employer and in the opinion of this user, too: “I have been with the company for about 12 years and there is not a place in the company I dislike.” Congratulations, AARP and keep on rockin’!
