Home care aide

The Job: Home health aides and personal care aides help people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or cognitive impairment by assisting in their daily living activities. They tend to work in clients’ homes, group homes and day services programs. 

Entry Level Education: High school diploma

The Salary: $24,060 per year/ $11.57 per hour

Medical Assistant 

The Job: Medical assistants complete administrative and clinical tasks in healthcare settings like hospitals, offices of physicians, and other facilities. 

Entry Level Education: Many Medical Assistants get into the profession with a postsecondary nondegree award. But, you can also land a job with a high school diploma and learn through on-the-job training.

The Salary: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Assistants earned $33,610 per year or $16.16 per hour in 2018.

Nursing Assistant 

The Job: Nursing assistants provide basic care and help patients with their daily lives by feeding, bathing and helping them with other daily tasks. 

Entry Level Education: To become a nursing assistant you need to complete a state-approved education program that includes both instruction on the principles of nursing and supervised clinical work. These programs are available in high schools, community colleges, vocational and technical schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. You also have to pass your state’s competency exam. 

The Salary: $28,540 per year/$13.72 per hou

Medical Secretary

The Job: Medical Secretaries perform all kinds of secretarial duties but with specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. They are in charge of scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence. Most Medical Secretaries work in Physician Offices, Hospitals, Dentists and Outpatient Centers. 

Entry Level Education: High School Diploma and experience using computer software applications.

The Salary: $35,760 per year /$17.19 per hour

Medical Biller 

The Job: As a medical biller or coder, it’s your job to read patient charts to determine medical history, including diagnoses and any treatments given to them. Medical billers are also in charge of collecting payments from patients, submitting reimbursement claims to insurers and maintaining billing records.

Entry Level Education: High school diploma

The Salary: $40,350 per year

Occupational Therapy Aide

The Job: Occupational Therapy aides perform a number of different tasks set out for them by an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant. They are mostly responsible for preparing patients and treatment rooms. OT Aides mostly work in occupational therapists’ offices, in hospitals, and in nursing care facilities.

Entry Level Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. You can expect to be trained on the job.

The Salary: $57,620 per year/$27.70 per hour 

Psychiatric Aide 

The Job: Psychiatric aides assist mentally impaired or emotionally disturbed patients, under the direction of nursing and medical staff. They assist with all kinds of daily living activities, lead patients through educational and recreational activities, and accompany patients to and from examinations and treatments.

Entry Level Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

The Salary: $30,860 per year/ $14.84 per hour 

Hospital Housekeeper Trainee

The Job: Hospital housekeepers keep hospital buildings in clean and orderly condition. They carry out all kinds of heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish. As a housekeeper you might also be responsible for managing the furnace and boiler, performing routine maintenance activities, notifying management when repairs need to be made, and cleaning snow or debris from the sidewalk.

The Salary: You would start on a trainee salary, but you can expect to earn $11.48 per hour or $23,880 per year as a housekeeper. 

Patient Transporter/Orderly

The Job: Patient transporters or orderlies assist patients in and out of taxis, ambulances, cars, and helicopters; lifting patients on and off beds; moving them to and from special service and treatment areas, and operating rooms using wheelchairs or moveable beds.

Entry Level Education: High school diploma or equivalent. 

The Salary: $28,530 per year/ $13.72 per hour
